A Historic Vessel

The USS Rankin was built by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company and launched on December 22, 1944. With impressive dimensions—459 feet long, 63 feet across the beam, and a displacement of 14,160 gross tons—this vessel was a powerhouse of its time. She could reach speeds of 16.5 knots and had a cruising range of 17,000 miles.

  • Wartime Service:
    The USS Rankin played a pivotal role in World War II, earning a battle star for her service. As a troop and supply transport vessel, she supported key operations, including the Okinawa campaign, where she delivered 5,000 tons of Army ammunition. Post-war, the Rankin took on amphibious training missions and responded to the Lebanese crisis in 1958, landing 5,000 marines in Beirut. She also had a notable presence during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

  • Decommission and Reefing:
    After years of service, the USS Rankin was decommissioned and eventually sunk to serve as an artificial reef. Today, this storied wreck is a thriving underwater ecosystem and a favorite destination for wreck diving enthusiasts.
